The Willys M38 or MC model was the
first Jeep Built after World War II. It was based
on the civilian 1949 CJ-3A, designed with added
heavy-duty frame and suspension features for rugged
military use. The Willys
MC Jeep, called the M38 Truck or War Wagon, was built
from September 1950 until July 1952. It was a
standardized version tactical rig that evolved from the
iconic World War II MB Jeep model. The small, four
wheel drive utility transport vehicle was used
extensively in the Korean War. Willys-Overland
produced 61,423 M39 Jeeps.
The Willys M38 Jeep was powered
by an upgraded version of the "Go-Devil" in-line four
cylinder, water cooled, side valve or L-Head gasoline
engine. It produced 60 horsepower at 4,000 rpm
with a maximum torque of 105 foot-pounds at 2,000 rpm.
The flat fendered Willys M38
could be fitted with an enclosed body panel cab called
an Arctic Top, or could be outfitted with an enclosed
canvas cab and doors or just a canvas roof. The
Jeep had fold down seats and a hinged windshield with
bottom mounted wipers. It had a 24 volt electrical
system and a full floating rear axle. It used a
three speed manual synchromesh transmission. |
